Bad Boys of Manchester United

Manchester United are one of the greatest club ever, they have a proud history and are one of the biggest club’s in the world. However in their long history there have been players in this club who can be called ‘The Bad Boys’ because of the things they did on the pitch or off-field controversies.

So here is a list of these bad boys:

Roy Keane

One of the finest ever Manchester United captain, who  was an excellent mid-fielder, however even Keane had his moments of madness at United. Keane ended Alf-inge Halands’scareer who played for Manchester City, by a revenge tackle, that almost broke Haland’s leg.
Apart from this, it is also said that he did not leave United on good terms despite having won many titles and also does not share a good relationship with his then manager Sir Alex Ferguson.




Gary Neville


Though Neville did not really have a bad character but he was capable of irritating other teams and players with his taunting and unnecessary celebrations. His biggest controversial moment was when he made a gesture at Carlos Tevez when Manchester City was playing United at the Carling Cup after the Argentine joined the club.



Wayne Rooney


The current United captain was said to have cheated on his wife when she was pregnant with their son Kai, with an escort named Jennifer, though it did not turn into a huge controversy, he managed to settle his personal life pretty well. But still, Rooney you bad boy!



Cristiano Ronaldo



One of the world’s best players, Ronaldo, is also one of the most arrogant players.  His biggest controversy was when he announced that he had become a father. The mother of Cristiano Ronaldo Jr is said to be an American Waitress who Ronaldo met in Los Angeles. It is also said that Ronaldo paid her £10 million to keep her identity a secret.



Carlos Tevez



One of the best strikers of the world, but, he also is one of the most controversial players. Tevez was given a good reception at Manchester United but he created a big controversy when he made a switch to Manchester City, where he become the crucial figure for the club, this also made him one of the  most hated player at Old Trafford. Though Tevez was an essential player for City but he did not have a good relation with Roberto Mancini which resulted in, him sitting on the bench for most of the games. He also had controversy in the game against Bayern Munich with Roberto Mancini where he refused to come on as a substitute when City was  2-0 down to the German club.




Rio Ferdinand


Indeed, he was one of the most important defender for Manchester United since his big money to Old Trafford. He did have some off-field controversies which made his life pretty hard.
He got into an argument with “Mirror” journalist Oliver Holt on Twitter. Rio got banned for a long time when he missed a drug test. He was also alleged to have affairs with plenty of women and was also involved in a court case. Ferdinand was stripped of his England captaincy due to these reasons. In October 2014, Ferdiand was again charged by the FA for using offensive language on Twitter, after referring to the mother of critic as a “Sket” a Jamaican slang word for a promiscuous female.




Mickey Thomas



The Welsh footballer has played for several clubs like Manchester United, Everton, Stoke City and Chelsea but is infamously remembered for his counterfeit operations, where he laundered fake money through the trainees at wexham. After getting caught he was sentenced to 18 months in jail.


Ryan Giggs


“Giggsy” one of  the greatest players who played under Sir Alex Ferguson. Giggs always had a good media behind him after he found himself rocked by the controversy just before Champions League Final against Barcelona, where details of his affair with Imogen Thomas emerged. Since then, there have been reports of his involvement with other woman as well. But despite this he will always be one of the greatest footballer’s who played for Manchester United.




George Best


One of the greatest players ever was fantastic during his spell with Manchester United. However, his life after his career was not that great as he was involved in plenty of controversies. He became an alcoholic and was also involved in some violence, as it was reported that he allegedly hit his second wife. It was also reported that Best stole money from a women’s bag in order to fund his drinking. He was also sentenced for three months for drunk driving, assaulting a police officer and failing to answer bail.  Best become an alcoholic and later died at the age of 59 but he will always be considered as one of the greatest footballers ever.



Eric Cantona



Sir Alex Ferguson made several great signings in the past but the signing of Eric Cantona has to be considered as the landmark in his tenure as the manager of the club. Even Cantona had his moments of madness when he was sent off in a game against Crystal palace in 1995 but that didn’t end here As after the game he did not take the reaction of the Crystal Palace fan kindly and launched a kick in Kung-fu Style which led him getting banned for almost 8 months, two week of prison sentence and 120 hours of community service.
